Four Tips to Fight the Stay At Home Blues

For me, the novelty of staying at home, distance learning, and virtual events has worn off!  Each day feels a little bit more like the one before, and our “new normal” seems to be filled with monotony.  Can you relate?  If gearing up for another day of the same thing is wearing you out, here are four simple steps you can take to shake off the stay at home blues!

  1.  Stick With a Routine for the Non-negotiables:  Let’s face it.  There are some things that just have to be done.  Most likely, they are the things you least want to do and the things you spend the most mental energy trying to talk yourself into doing.  Decide what the non-negotiables are, and create a routine that allows you to complete the tasks you have to do.  Save your metal energy for the rest of the day!
  2. Give Yourself Something to Look Forward To:  Anticipating something fun is a great antidote for the stay at home blues.  Pick a day and an activity you love and save it as a special treat once a week.  I have friends who’ve made Saturdays take out day.  Every Saturday, they order take out from a different restaurant.  During the week they check out different menus and plan what they want to try.  It gives them moments of fun during the week and something to look forward to when the weekend arrives.  Another friend has family movie time on Fridays. After dinner they grab blankets and pillows and nest in front of the TV.  One person creates a list of three movies, one person chooses what to watch from the movie list, and one person picks the snack.  Fun debate happens all week as they lobby for their favorites to be chosen.  Find something that works for your family.  Make your own pizza night.  Face time with extended family.  Try a new recipe.  Spa night.  Family basketball games.  The ideas are endless.  Pick one and start a weekly tradition everyone can look forward to!
  3. Music Mondays:  Struggling to find enthusiasm for another week of work or school at home?  Lift your mood with a special Monday morning playlist!  A good song can put a smile on your face.  A great song gets you moving to the music and helps you shake off the blues.  Make the music family friendly and turn up the volume.  Good Morning by Mandisa, the Trolls soundtrack featuring Can’t Stop the Feeling, Elvis and his Blue Suede Shoes- throw them together in a playlist and get your week going with music you love.
  4. Join a Live Stream Worship Service:  Connect with a community by joining a live streamed church service on Sunday morning.  Interact and participate online.  Experience the joy of being part of the fellowship of believers.  Pastor Skopak, Pastor Popp, and Principal Tanner invite you to worship with the Grace family at 9:00 a.m. via our Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/gracelcmsjax) or our YouTube channel (GraceLutheranJax).  It’s a good feeling to know that you are not alone, and that together we will get through this time.

All things come to an end, and eventually this time of social isolation due to COVID 19 will be over.  While you wait at home, try these tips and shake off the stay at home blues!
